Discount on machinery

I'm curious and interested to know what discount (if any) you would expect on say a lawn mower from the normal price?

I had a situation this week regarding a new lawnmower..the people i normally go to don't stock the machine i was looking at, so i had to ring a couple of dealers that were 'local'. Straightaway they offered 10%. I've never dealt with either before and yet when i approached the peeps i normally go to about another machine they only offered 7% and yet they have had my business for 10 years plus. For me its not all about price...after sales service is equally important and i don't really want to sour my relationship by haggling..but it did leave me thinking why not at least 10% off list price considering the length of time I've dealt with them. I've yet to make a decision over which mower.

I'd be interested to know about other peoples experiences and what there expectations are.

  • 20% which is the equivalent to vat but in realty the dealer dos not give you that as the cost of vat is reduced

  • I've never asked, my dealer always gives me his "best" price and I've accepted that; he gets all my machinery, consumables and repair business, so over 15 years or so he's not done badly! Looking at what I've bought this year, against retail price, it's about 20-25% on big stuff. He is largely trade-only though; I did start out using a more retail-based company and their trade sales weren't enough to make me important to them!

As I've said before, to me speed of repair is more important than price. £200 off a mower is lovely, but if I have to wait two weeks for a repair then it's a false economy. I want to be front-of-the-queue, and preferably while-you-wait for small repairs. That's where the relationship with the dealer counts.

  • My local dealer gives me about 10% less than the best internet price I can find which is ok for me, keeps him in business and his mechanics are excellent at fixing the things I break!

Things not in stock are usually next day, he phones and I pick it up on the way home.
