Hi Matt,
I know a lot of people really like corel draw as a simple vector program. I use Paint Shop Pro but thats more of a drawing program than design so probably not what you're after.
There's the classic AutoCad as well, which is ideal for building and landscape designs but takes a while to get your head around.

Try the free version of sketchup first and see how it goes. As a visualisation tool I find it pretty good. If you don't like it try one of the others.

i have tried a few recently.. sketch up to me is the easiest to get use to however it doesn't offer the best in quality in my opinion.. i tried the free trial of vector works and all it did was repeatedly crash when i trie to do the tutorials.
I'll try dynascape now.
