Cylinder mowers are undoubtedly better than rotories for quality of cut, but are not really relavent for domestic or commercial contract gardening. They take a lot of looking after and are not nearly as versatile as rotories. Best left to the golf courses and money no object gardens.
Have you seen how much pro cylinder mowers cost ? Theyre more like works of art than lawn mowers.
For resi & commercial work, a good quality, well maintained rotary mower will produce a fine cut. More so if a roller mower and you regularly sharpen/change blade.
Probably more important that then mower, is the quality of the grass / surface you want to maintain. Cultural practices alone can improve the quality of the cut 100%.
In all my years, never had the need or requirement to use a cylinder, but then we do not maintain bowls or golf greens.
