I was trimming a topiary box hedge this afternoon, when I found a froth of ivy growing at the base and creeping its way through the hedge. Chopped it back with the clippers and cleared away the trimmings, when I saw......the fibre optic cable sliced through with my clippers!!!!The cable was loose, no conduit around it, running up INTO the hedge, straight through it and out the other side. I am covered under public liability thank god but with an excess of £100. I really don't think I should be liable as I was trimming a hedge, not digging.......what do you guys think?

Been there..Done that. Know what it feels like:-))))

You are not liable if you could not have reasonably known or seen cable or if the client failed to inform you of its location.

Photograph it and show the cable route and tell you client to contact the cable company and get them out to repair foc. If they argue ask to see their spec for installing street to house cable.

The cable guys take the easier option as they get paid piece work style, so it goes in the easiest way for them, they get paid and move on....
  • seems a bit od to just pop a fiber optic cable in a hedge, i would think its bt,s fault tbh mate
  • Your van's a Tardis isn't it?
  • So thats why I could get on to LJN yesterday!

Put a spade through a water pipe once and cut through a gas pipe in a hedge. I didn't know I'd cut the pipe until all the birds started falling out the trees. Even more alarming, I was on a fag break when I noticed them!!!
  • I work in Edinburgh and come across unprotected fibreoptic cables all the time, often though hedges or climbers and sometime buried a whole 2 inches under soil! I always ask before starting a jobbut often the clients aren't even aware themselves
  • thats well funny !!!
