Cracked earth

hi, I have a client with a small back garden in North London who are on clay and halfway up a hill... their garden has huge cracks in it - deep enough to put your arm in up to the shoulder and up to 10cm wide in places - they're like a load of tectonic plates!
The garden seems to be on a bit of a mound compared to the neighbours and with more lumps and bumps in the ground. I'm thinking probably lots of building debris buried under there and poor drainage - but as this is only my third job I'd really like to get a soil expert in to suss it out - I don't want to build my new design and then for it all to crack apart in a year!
Any advice on what to do / who to get in would be very helpful - thanks as always

  • Yeah i thought about ringing up Tony and getting him over with those xray machine thingys and digging a few trenches.
It's lawn at the moment - it's not really a mound, it's just the ground is a bit more raised than the neighbours.
Haven't done the design yet but... I'll order in the shingle...
    Thanks colin :)

if its on a mound save your self some graft and ring time team, they will come and dig it up for you.

is it lawn or beds and borders or hard landscape? lots of deep footings if it hard landscape, soft landscape you need to turn in either shingle or compost to break through the clay and reduce some of top compaction
