Coping With Hot Weather

The first truly hot day of the year and I always get knocked for six. I always get used to working in the heat and I've picked up a few stratagies over the years.Early starts is one thing, but how early? My private clients understandably get a bit annoyed when I start my mower at 7am.Another thing I have discovered is a powder called Dioralite. It is designed to replace salts after a spell of tummy trouble. However, it also replaces salts lost through sweat. A dose every three or four days during a hot spell is enough to ward off that lathargic, giddy feeling. Also, wacth the amount of water you are drinking. If you find that you are drinking a lot of water but still not quenching your thirst, it could be that you are lacking salts.Too much water can dilute the salts in your blood wich need to be at the right concentration for the body to fuction properly. It thats the case then try an isotonic sports drink or a dose of dioralite. What tips do you have?

  • GATORADE is my secret energy booster - It is pure magic in a bottle. You can be feeling like poo and then suddenly - you're on top of the world - its great! And its quite good for you in as much as it replenishes salts etc. I swear by it in this weather.
  • I shall add it to my shopping list!

  • Once had to do some mapping in the Spanish desert, 54 degrees, wide brimmed hat regularly filled with water, long lunch breaks (changing pattern of working day was weird but essential). Be careful with the dioralite, not really fit for purpose - some strange things can happen to your digestive system over time!!! I miss lucozade so much, but have found 50% orange juice / 50% lemonade pretty good and regularly take the multi vits - A to Z and have few problems. With regards the salt, try a more mediterranean diet, loads of olives, tomatoes with salt on etc.,
  • I agree with the meditaranian diet, it's ideal in the hot weather. Good advice on the Dioralite, I only use it if I'm feeling really bad.

I don't know anything about Spain or deserts so exuse my ignorance but what is there to map in a desert? Sounds like a good adventure though!

  • Sounds about as cushy as being a tree surgeon in the Sahara.
  • Chilly here today 13C so no coping mechanisms used except I did put my fleece on when on the ride on and then had a nice cup of tea.
  • I used to work at 35-39 for about 6-8 month , if it gone over that would do shopping , office work or whatever- just looked like spent time when tried to work.

take lots of water - I had a pack of 9 litre in the car- drink as much as you can! no worries about salt.

make sure you know what you drink- I found 1.5 litre is bottle is handy and you can see what you had.

My partner used to cover the bottle with a sock to keep it cool- as usually it would get very hot!

but no worries about that here!

I've done gardening work all over the world. Thailand, Spain, NZ and Zimbabwe, in some serious heat and humidity. A simple method to make life easier is to chase the shade round the garden. This works better in larger gardens with trees and cover, but thinking ahead to what you have to do and what areas will be in shade during the day can make life so much easier when things heat up.
