Commercial Lawnmowers

Morning All

Couple of things on mowers it would be good to get people's opinions on.

We've used a variety of manufacturers and models over the last decade but I still can't decide on what to go for when we look to renew next time around.  We currently run Honda HRX 426 QX 17" machines which on the whole have been pretty good, however we do have a recurring issue with the drive chain coming off and its a massive ball ache to fix, not to mention the costs involved and hassle.  In the past we've used Hayter Harriers, Mountfields and ATCOs all of which had issues mainly with build quality.  Trouble is, we need to run 17/18" machines due to the variety of sized lawns we maintain and we seem to find that on machines of that size, build quality isn't always up to much when the machine's being used all day everyday throughout the summer.

Any thoughts?  Has anyone had experience with the less commercially available manufacturers?

  • What about the new Hayter Harrier 41 PRO? Build quality looks significantly better than previous plus it comes with a 2 year commercial warranty.  A friend of mine swears by Masport, which tend to be 18", though I've never used them myself. I currently use a Weibang which has exceptional build quality but is 19" as is my Etesia.

Agree on Masport's being a good mower.I ran one of the 18" rollers for a number of season. Very strong build wise and not much to go wrong,no BBC though.

  • Thanks Gents.  Interesting comments.  Used to love our old Hayters but the supports were only aluminium so kept shearing off.  Ended up having a friend fabricate a steel one.  Would be interested to see if that build quality has improved.  Decent commercial warranty as well Jonathan.

I'll have a look at the Weibangs and Masports.  Seen them but been reluctant to take the plunge without recommendations.

p.s if you've broken the deck handle mounts on 48/56 hayters rollers (old style) there is an easy and cheap fix by buying two extra lower handlebar clamps. Often saves scraping the deck and means it can continued to be used (for us it's lasted several years).

  • Just bought a weibang roller mower recently, so cant comment on long term reliability but the build quality looks very good,(aluminium deck), easy to fold up, bag fills up well, no complaints so far!
