Combi system stihl probably

Hi all I know in the past I've been on here saying I don't like the combi systems but.....I've got a job lined up for after grass cutting season which will be hundreds of metres of edging of grass! As in cutting the grass back to its proper place on pavement verges. So I'm thinking a combi unit plus the edge attachment. Question is which engine do I need to run the edger?Does not have to be stihl by the way in fact if quite like to spend the money elsewhere! Thanks in advance Richard

Would a proper wheeled edger not be a better choice for such an amount of edging?  Such as this

https://www.frjonesandson.co.uk/products/lawnflite-550g-lawn-edger-... Won't cost any more (actually less) than buying the stihl handheld.

Lawnflite 550G lawn edger (9" blade)
This 550G Edger features a 3.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine with a 23cm/9" steel dual tip blade. It has a rotating head allowing three different angle…

It could well be a better choice I suppose. I'm only thinking handheld as that what I've seen continental using this year doing the same thing!
It's a huge job and when I say hundreds of meters I really mean thousands as it's over 400 areas of grass. Ranging from 2 by 2 meters to 50 by 20!
I reckon 3 months work without some mechanical help!!

Richard, we have a 3 wheel one similar to the above and also the Kombi Edger

If you're just 'cutting' the edge grass they will work but you need to be accurate otherwise you end up cutting a "new" edge.

If you use a turned around Kombi/Strimmer attachment that is probably the easiest and lightest with the cord easily cutting the grass, but not massively cutting into the soil.

Look at KM94 as they are a new style traditional 2ST but is light and more than man-enough for those sort of tasks.

thanks for that but I perhaps need to be clearer in what I'm doing! The cutting of "grass" without creating "new" edges is secondary.
The job is to cut back verges to the curb line. This could mean taking the "grass/turf" back more than a foot in places as its overgrown massively over the years but they are keen to try and get it back in order after years of neglect. So whatever I buy needs to be able to cut turf/soil as its primary purpose (at least to start with for this job!)

I also tend to use shears in gardens but do have a few that I never seem to have time to cut fresh edges in!

Then the 3 wheel dedicated edger or the one wheel Stihl Edger attachment should fit the job well and get a long handled square mouth shovel - makes clearing path edges easier with less back strain

Thanks for that. Long handle shovel sounds like a good idea!
Think I might try and hire one to get an idea how quick it works because the next issue is price!!
  • The KM90 4 Mix runs the edger just fine, so any of them will do it I guess.

The edger blade is supplied with blunt edges, bit rubbish methinks, sharpen the edge and it does a great job.

Think I would go with a wheeled unit too, for that length - I have a Tanka TLE 550, 280mm or something like blade 80mm drop, would make short work of it.

Thanks for that. What are they like at sharpening up edges on garden borders just out of interest?
      • I've found it pretty good and can be a timesaver.

Have to go careful though, it is easy to  take a chunk out of a border.
