Clematis suitable for large pots

I have a client who would like to put several(3) clematis into pots, mainly so that they can be moved when neccessary as they will be around a swimming pool.

She doesnt want early/spring flowering ones as she wants them to be in flower when they are actually using the garden and pool, so May onwards ideally.

Pots will be approx 20 inch diameter and farely tall. Obelisks of some description or fan shaped trellis for the plant support, upto approx 5ft high + pot.

Plants will be in full sun for most of the day.

Any thoughts?

  • I have lots of Clematis in pots, - and they do very nicely as long as they are watered regularly.

Don't plant Montana varieties, and the winter flowering ones don't seem to do that well, but i've found

Alpina (early) and Viticella (july-Sep) varieties do very well, - (and are easier to look after than the large flowered types)

This is a fantastic variety that's been in a pot in my garden with lots of bulbs for 3 years.
