I worked in quality control for one of the largest ready mix concrete companies in the UK in the early 90's it was known then that OPC / Portland cement was the most polluting building product on earth. The introduction of PBF/ pulverised blast furnace ash is not in itself any less polluting but being a by product of another process was seen to be better environmentally but I think that is a mute point given that the same amount of CO2 was produced
I often regret our own use of cement and contribution to global production. I ask my employees to mix as weak a ratio as we can use and keep structural integrity. Usually 6:1 for mortars and 8:1 for rough footing mixes. We use pure lime mortars where we can to which is definitely better for the environment.
