Cats 'number 2' area!

Hi all,

hope you have all had a good Easter break.

One of my customers has asked me to create an area in their garden where their cat can go to the toilet. They have tried putting a litter tray outside but the cat still insists on pooping in the grass, which isn't too good when you have small children running around!

So my question is... does anyone know of a certain soil/gravel/material that cats love to 'go' on?? I will be cutting an area about 1m x 1m into the turf in the corner of the garden. I wont be putting up a toilet roll holder or a magazine rack though...

Thanks

Neil

are u going to add a shower and manicure area for them as well ....
  • In what way?

The customer (who I've had for a couple of years) has asked for a job, I said I'd look into it and get back to them. If I can find a material that cats are attracted to for them to do their business then I will go and strip a square metre of turf away and put down chosen material. I don't really see what's so demeaning about that.

Your biggest problem Neil isn't the material or siting it, how deep, texture etc - it's the cat.

I've got two and they're a law unto themselves.

They're never satisfied with their food, cannot decide if they want to be in the house or out of it and will defecate in any area of aggregate regardless of size.

If you did put a dedicated area down I'd put money on them/it going everywhere but on it.

  • Cheers Paul, I'll give this a go.

I would lay down some sand and soil mixed together then get the customer to add a few of the cats turds so it smells right to the cat.

  • you could also suggest that at the same time they add some cat repellant on the lawn, to discourage them from pooing on it.  Also not sure if the grass is long? If it is, make sure they keep it cut really short, as this can deter them.
  • Just plant something fantastic and expensive, this'll guarantee the cat/s dive straight in and do their best.
  • Hi Neil - this should almost certainly work - I've got 2 cats and they 'go' wherever smells of them!

  • Cats like to go to the loo in privacy so it needs to be in a sheltered location, and they will prefer to go in dry material, once it is wet they will stop using it unless they have no option.  The material will redreplacing on a regular basis, may I be so bold as to sugest Cat Litter !! other dry materials will work, Sand or composted green wast are two that spring to mind. If they use a litter tray indoors placing this in the location of the outdoor loo will show them where to go, this is the same method you would use to train your cat to use the human loo in the house. (i wont go into this but just look at the videos on you tube)
