Cast stone mix

Hi, anyone know where I can purchase a bag of loose mix for casting. I need to cast a bespoke stone step but cannot find where to get hold of the loose mix?  Any help appreciated, thanks

  • hi roger give us a bit more detail is it loose casting or institute what sort of finish (appearance) is required

  • Hi thanks for reply, its for loose casting a step, a DIY effort really; was gonna make me own cast. Looking for a greyish green colour and a fine finish. Was hoping there is a prebagged readymix product I could buy instead of making it all up myself. Dont need alot, one or two bags.

    • I'd say three to one grey cement to sharp sand with a touch of green cement dye and possibly some powdered charcoal. Use some rebar in there for strength if there is any kind of tensile load, and after it's cured apply a hardener.

  • I would certainly suggest some kind of vibration to remove any air bubbles from with the casting too

  • make your mould and just get some handy bags of grit sand and pea gravel a bag of cement and some Barr reinforcement mix at 3x2x1 when you have filled your mould / shutter tap it with a hammer quiet a few times to get the air out

  • Hi thanks for all th responses. I was hoping that i could get hold of some premade drycast stuff  that looks similar to sandstone when finished. Obviously it looks like its not easily available in shops so might make my own. The whole point of this is for an authentic finish.
