The Guardian Small Business Network has some interesting advice on how to use social media as a main point of reference.

"Recruitment advertising agency andSoMe relies on Facebook and Twitter for its online presence after replacing its website with a holding image two and a half years ago. Co-founder Mark Rice says the move made a statement about the company, reflecting its shift from print to digital advertising and eventually social media: “If we are going to sell our expertise in social media to our clients, where better to do that than [on] the platforms that we’re selling to them?”

Your LJN business page can be a powerful business tool if managed and maintained properly.

  • Social media should never replace a website. It is fine to use sites owned by others to drive traffic to a site you own, but you should never 'build on rented land'.
  • You'd have to be in an industry where social media was the first place clients look for you, and we certainly aren't!

Perhaps the question should be "will a website ever replace your company's visual presence and corporate image, i.e. van signage and uniforms".

  • I don't have a website. I get plenty of business by word of mouth, more than I can handle at times, and so can't really justify paying out for a website that I don't really need. I did set up a Facebook page for the business though and within 3 weeks of setting it up had my first job from it.

  • Depends on the quality of the existing website - I don't have one; as with Chris I've got enough through my Facebook page, it is as interactive as a webpage,my customers message me on it and I can target market when required.

  • I think everyone has a point and social profiles certainly have a place. People might as well stay with a Facebook page if its just to interact within their circles. A basic website with contact details is much of a muchness to a facebook page. You can even add your facebook address to business cards and leaflets etc.

Where a website will surpass any social page is if its targeted and optimized for local services and relevant search terms. This is really not necessary for small business not set up to handle this many new leads, its more for taking business's to the next level. There are 1000's of people searching each month for local tradesman and very few use social as a search tool.

We have many social profiles and they are great for keeping your name in front of people, but in one of our landscaping business's where we employ 12 people the website and local traffic is the biggest producer of new work by far.

Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter all have a different set of dynamics to LJN or a dedicated business website.

If a client uses a search engine to hunt for a landscaper or gardener then there's every chance that LJN will be ranked higher in SERPS than an individual poorly SEO'd website.

  • Yeah I agree Phil, in essence their LJN page would be hijacking the authority and allowing their page to climb for the domain authority only.
