Business Rates - who has a business property & pays them ?

It's not often you get a letter from the local council offering you money back, but that's just happened to me this morning. To support small businesses, the Small Business Rate (SBR) relief has been extended from 50% reduction to 100% reduction ffor rates <£6000 pa with effect from 1st Oct 2010 until 30th Sept 2011 on commercial properties. For business rates between £6000 - £12000 pa there is a sliding rate relief down to 0% reduction if you pay £12000 pa or more in business rates It's designed to help small business survive in the current climate. So having paid ours, we now get 50% back from this years costs, and 50% off next years. So if you rent a yard or premises, it will help running costs and hopefully encourages small business and the employment they bring. I just hope I haven't misunderstood the 3 page letter ! Anyone else seen this ?

I think this government website confirms what I understood from the letter this morning:

    http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/localgovernment/bril062010

Interesting in that it 'recommends' that local authority inform eligible businesses ?

I wonder if some LA are more forthcoming than others.....?
  • As a growing Nursery we are exempt from Business rates, so we don't have all problems involved with them.
  • Spot on Gary, we are on exactly the same terms, as regards Business rates, as the other lot that keep cows and other stuff like that.

Steve, you kept that rates exemption under your hat when you made this comment:

"Farmers get hand outs to grow."
"Horticulture gets nothing to make a country a green and pleasant land."

Don't go ballistic Steve, it's been a long day :-)

  • We had our ammended rates bill for the shop on Friday, Im getting a (very small) rebate and nothing more to pay until April 2011, I was so shocked I had to phone and ask the council and double check!
  • We have just taken on a new unit and are having to sort out our rates ATM, aparently we have to pay as much rates as rent! I think not so we have the rates guy comming to see us soon!

It seems not every Council is being as up front as they might be:
