    Not much.

Although as an FSB member I use their free business account with the Co-op.
  • Absolutely nothing, Except you get worse service with a business account and have to pay a fortune for it. RBS - 3 months and six requests before I could get a replacement debit card. 6 months and 10 requests before they would stop sending my business statements to my old address. Ironically they gave me the mortgage for the new house.

FSB member & bank with Co-op. Even taking into consideration the FSB membership fee, I'm still saving more in fees than what the membership costs.
  • We moved from Barclays because Abbey offered free banking and have had a business account for 15 years which then changed to Santandar and never paid a penny for the privilage.

  • I'm with Lloyds and after enjoying 18 months charge-free, it's a bit of a shocker when you receive their fees.

Any cash payments I now put into my personal account and transfer over to the business account, because the charge for depositing cash in particular is ridiculously high.

Certainly going to explore the FSB option.

  • It's critical to keep business and personal accounts separate. You'll be in a heap of trouble if you have a tax inspection otherwise. Get people paying you electrinically if possible, and invoice by email; cuts the costs a lot. Cash is a nightmare as it costs a load to bank, I just don't accept it now.

As a glass-half-full guy, I look at it the other way. Banks are businesses, so why shouldn't we pay for them? I get completely free banking on all our personal accounts, so the business account is the only one I have to pay for. As such, all our banking is tax-deductible. :-)

The FSB account also gives you a £25 bonus each year - happy days!

  • The fact that your accountancy firm can't advise you which banks to go with flags up the fact that they are crap and that you are going to get bad advice or that they could not care less...I'd ditch them tomorrow if I were you but if you stay with them I can gaurentee that they will loose you money.

Banks are in a perilous state these days so you should be very careful which bank you choose, unless you want to work for nothing. If nothing else I would suggest an ethical bank i.e Co-op.
  • why is your accountant telling you that you need to open a business account?
