Building-in a wood fired outdoor oven

It's heavy

The oven can either be used free standing or built in. I am going to build my oven into the walls I am constructing along the edge of my terrace, so it will be a while before I'm ready (more on this a little later).

For the moment the oven rests in its pallet alongside the track next to my house. It will remain there until I'm ready to install it. The reason? It's really heavy and I don't want to move it unnecessarily.

Being creative

Laura recently posted examples of how people have installed their ovens. It's given me inspiration.

I live in a very old French farmhouse and it had a wood fired oven which was used to dry the prunes and bake bread (probably cooking too). So it is appropriate and quite apt that I am going back in time.

I have a picture in my mind's eye but this may change as the building evolves. It won't be until I get the plinth and the fireproof square base installed before I can gauge perspective and finalise my plan (I intend to maintain an open mind).

Because I have already installed the footing and built the non-square wall corner already - and it's smaller than I need - I will have to corbel the front wall out when I get to the required height. In the meantime I've started building the front curved face together with  a decorative, but functional, wood store underneath. 

I installed the arch former - see how to make an arch former here - this evening and started building the tile detail and retaining wall.

A couple of good afternoons and lots of stone later and the build is taking shape. I've created a heavy-duty wooden shelf so that I can build out over the front wall slightly. The wood also breaks up the face and adds to the aesthetics.

    I didn't use the wood lintel in the end but instead opted to cast a lintel in situ.

    This worked perfectly, enabling me to shift the oven forward enough so it fitted snugly into the limited space.

    Yes, all reclaimed from some old cow sheds a few metres away.

    I'm loving the contrast of the natural stone with the moulded concrete dome of the oven.
