I use a John Deere JS63V but would not recommend it as it's falling to bits, drive had a repair after 12 months and I am waiting for another failure one of these days. It is a fast machine though and very quick at getting the job done.
Heard good things about victa mulchers; a good used model would be my choice.
Victa mowers used to be a fantastic tool for exactly this sort of job but in all honesty, they have lost a lot of versatility since they had to replace the two stroke engines with Honda's etc to conform with emission laws for the UK. The blade system on the Victa remains the same however and provides great impact protection which is normally main cause for concern when looking for a machine to handle this sort of work.
I think the main questions have to be - how rough are the verges? have been maintained previously? sloped or all flat?
