    Cornus controversa variegata - wedding cake dogwood? Striking tiered effect, and the variegation provides some interest.

    Other than that what size / season? Anything flowering is going to be a one or two week wonder I think ...

    Acers can look good, and provide Autumn colour. Unlikely to do well if the site is exposed, and many want some shade during the day.

    For Evergreen I think topiary is the only thing that will provide much in the way of "impact"
