Berthoud Cosmos pro 18 knapsack sprayer

Hope someone may be able to help.

Just bought an ex display (but unused) knapsack sprayer (see title) to practise spraying and then do my pa1/pa6 spraying qualification.

It was mostly assembled when it arrived and I completed the build, added a few litres of water and started pumping to build up the pressure.

After 30 or so pumps there was no pressure in the unit and no water came out of the lance when the trigger was released.

Got to say that the instructions are very basic and don't have a troubleshooting section so I contacted the selling company. They are to make enquiries with the manufacturer and get back to me.

Has anyone got any views/experience in this field or possibly guide me to a detailed (and easy to read) instruction sheet/manual?

Have received very uselful advice previously on this site ( eg Robbie) so many thanks in anticipation.

Nigel

No instructions but the first thing to check is that all the parts are screwed on tight. Sorry if you checked that and it's too obvious.
Are all the seals in place?
It may be that they were not put in if it was a display model?
In either case it would stop it pressurising.
    Just a thought
    • I will do that thanks Richard, first time I've had a sprayer so nothing's too obvious.

Any rough idea how many cranks of the handle should get enough pressure to get water spraying out of the lance?

        Presumably it's an 18 litre tank?<br />
If so you should be up to pressure after 30 pumps however remember the more liquid in the less you need to pump as there is less space for air pressure if that makes sense? So if you have only 2 litres in it will take a lot more pumps to get the pressure up!
You should feel the handle getting harder to pump as you go too.
        • Yep it's 18 litre capacity and there was no difference in resistance when I was pumping.

I'll take it apart tomorrow (very slowly haha) and check out seals and parts etc.

          many thanks!

  • Sorry to state the obvious, but sounds as simple as either something is missing or just not tight enough.

    • Thanks Colin-yes I'll have a good look at it today

      , fingers crossed

      • I have had similar with existing sprayer and just took my time taking it to bits and carefully putting it back together and hey presto - it's worked!

Its a piston pump. So if there are no obvious leaks from the joins or underneath its got to be in the internal piston.there is usually a ball bearing near the base that slides up and down to shut off/ let in air into the chamber - if thats stuck or missing there will be no pressure build up. Pump it but press the trigger to make sure its feeding water from tank to piston to lance. Try everything else as the others have said and if no joy look underneath and the piston is held in by screws - you'll need to strip it and sheck the ball bearing then check the rubber seals....Let us know how it goes..
