Bad back today

Off work today with a very painfull back ache which i think was brought on after cutting a hedge and obviously twisting/stretching too much. Felt the strain straight away and then 3 or 4 hours later after laying on the floor for awhile my back felt like it would snap in half if i stood up straight.Feels alittle better today but too painfull to work. Was just wondering. How often do you have days off [ or have to struggle through ] due to injuries, strains or general wear n tear?

Got a bad back myself. Done it lifting 100 2ft sq pressed concrete slabs. Cant go to work so going to physio this evening. Its the first time i have gone to physio so will tell you all if its worthwhile or not. Paper work til it gets better.
  • Sympathies David,

     Hope it's nothing serious.

Had to take three days off at the start of the month due to a bad back. Twisting to put mower in the van, Was on pain killers until last week but just has to keep working.

Back injuries are my worst fear as it is probably the one injury that can give you long term problems. Thankfully mine now seems ok hope yours is the same.

On another note, have to say from long experience I have always found physio to be a waste of time. Maybe  a chiro and time seem to be the answer.

  • In the last year l was repetitively suffering from back problems, working through the pain and often lurching off site at the end of the day hunched over.  In the last month l started yoga to try to sort my back out.  I noticed the benefits almost immediately and it's improving week after week.  Last two days have been terracing a garden by hand and my back has been fine...
  • Sorry to hear about your back it's really frustrating when it happens I know . It feels like your never gonna get better, I had a really bad shoulder last year and in the end did sone physio which really helped and also went to a really good osteopath , he helped relax all tense muscle in my back that was causing the shoulder to hurt. It only takes a little twist or a slightly heavy load. I try to get Help these days if my back goes then sometimes it can be a painful set back. No more heroics for me ! Get well soon !

Physio helped a little. There were quite a few cracking noises to be heard. Gave me a list of exercises to do and i bought a tens machine which really is good for pain relief. The physio is going to do some work to relax my back muscles and show me exercises i can do on my own. He said people who do manual work and sports people often have muscles that never relax properly even when they are supposed to.
  • Hi Paul,

Yeah I know mate but work in a lot of tight parking areas where you would struggle to use a ramp, plus I have to carry the mower up steps at about half my contracts anyway (one of em has 30 steps, not good), which are mainly rear courts at tenement properties. As I work alone I can't really avoid it at the moment.

Believe me I would rather not have to lift the bleedin thing.

Andy, dont lift your mower use ramps.

The fact you can lift something doesnt make it a wise thing to do repeatedly.

  • Hi all, just an update on my poorly back. Its not 100% but i have managed to work tuesday and today. Thanks for all your sympathy and replies and hope all you out there with aches and pains manage to get through the pain soon.

I too work alone and sometimes simply have to lift heavy things from day to day.

Last year i was having a back massage every 6 weeks or so just to keep my back in condition and it did seem to work but the back problem this time i think was down to twisting and stretching wilst hedge cutting. Had massage monday and like i say feeling much better.

  • Andy ,

I was sorry to read of your bad back , but glad to hear you are better.

I had days like that in the past , and had to go to work as I had some contracts.

try get non heavy tools - if working on small properties.

I used to use the big bags for lifting and one day it was socking wet- and the customer asked me to take it - very bad mistake it was. Any case better to walk twice than lift a too much.

While I worked for the fire brigade we had so many hours of learning how to lift etc.  It is actually  worth it, even more as that is your job.

    Take care, Ofer

  • i remember years ago did my back in lifting 1cwt bags of cement (paper bags) the young physio demonstrated how to lift the bags with a pillow i bit my tong then said it was imposable to lift one like that on the next visit i was tempted to take a bag but due to my back i could not lift it but it turned out that her dad was a builder and she asked him about them and he agreed with me

Hurt my back on Tuesday replacing my mum's washing machine. I can still work but i have got an appointment with a chiropractor this morning. It helped last time.

I have a bulging disc which bulges out occasionally and touches the nerve causing pain in the lower back and groin area. Its something i will always be prone to so have to be careful these days.
