Apart from needing to be adjusted to speed it up after the running-in period, I've never had a single issue with the Honda engines over 4 machines. The engine far outlives the rollers and gearbox on my mowers, I'd always go for it by choice.
Personally, I buy everything from one local dealer. I might be able to get a bit off by shopping around, but when something needs repairing I want to be at the front of the queue as his best customer. The £60 you save could be a false economy if the machine was out of action for a few days because the local guy didn't get the sale! I had a cable snap recently, and it was fixed in 20 minutes while I waited. That's me back to work and back to earning, rather than leaving the machine and going home to pick up my spare mower.
Have you asked if he'll go halfway on the difference, just as a suggestion?
They won't budge on the price :(
The daft thing is, I bought the previous Masport off them 11 years ago. I've got a spare mower for breakdowns but all my punters want the stripes!

Honda every time - most of my machinery has Honda engines - only the Hayter Harriers don't, just because you can't get one that fits the side drive mechanism!
I would second buying from the dealer, if there are any issues in the warranty period, what are you going to do if you bought it online? - One things for sure, the local guy probably won't be interested in fixing them as a priority!
We only run 22" Rotarola Masports and buy new every year because they are used 8 hours a day 5 days a week. The residual values are so low that we keep old machines just for spares. Everything will wear and need replacing long before the B&S engine gives problems. Like all machines they have their week points especially spares availability but the single greatest plus point is that they are faster than any other comparable machine on the market and can easily save us an hour a day compared to when we used Hayters.
You buy a mower once every 11 years, and expect them to give a decent discount? :-)
Is that a Morgan Aero in your profile pic? Did the factory tour a few years ago and it's an amazing car.

i also second the dealer route, and i love honda engines (as long as they are,and not the honda cheapy specials that are made under licence for honda),the b+s engines gave no trouble at all, they also need a tweek to increase speed, same as the honda engine, great mower though
I ordered the Honda engined model online and it arrived yesterday.
However much I wanted to use the local dealers I decided the £70 price difference was too much :)
(It came at £719 delivered, with oil).
Lets hope it picks up well in the wet :) :)
Yeah, Morgan Aero 8, my dream car :)

With regard to the warranty.
I emailed the supplier (not, as it turns out mowerdirect as I found it for £10 less) and received this reply.
"Thank you for your enquiry. It sounds like you have been subjected to some scare tactics from you local dealer ! In the un-likely event of a problem, firstly our technical help advisor would talk to you, if this failed and there was no local agent prepared to look at the machine, then we would collect and repair the mower.
Thankfully, Masport are a reliable product and it is very rare to have a problem. The mowers without question have a 2 year warranty, they used to have three.
We have been an authorised agent for 25 years.
Hope this alays any fears.
Kind regards..."
I've kept a record of this e-mail. :)

First full day out with the Masport.
Picked up great in the soaking wet:) Filled the grass box to the brink. I'm very happy.
As a side note I had my ipod on random and "I Know what I like" (Genesis) came on, with Peter Gabriel singing "Me? I'm just a lawnmower you can tell me by the way I walk"
Yeah, I'm getting the stoop :)
