There has has been an emergency approval given for the use of the product Asulox until 31st October 2013

Introduction
1 Anyone considering using Asulox to control bracken anywhere in the UK during
2013, is advised to review the information in this briefing.

2 An Emergency Authorisation for products containing the active ingredient asulam has been granted. This will allow the application of Asulox® to control bracken in the UK during the specified period in 2013. The use on docks is not authorised.

3 This briefing provides a summary of the main terms and conditions that will be
confirmed when the Notice of Authorisation is issued at the start of the Emergency
Authorisation period on 20 May 2013. These details will also be included in a new
Product Label that will be attached to the Asulox containers.

4 Many of the accepted practices had developed over the years but these had not been previously subject to a formal technical assessment by the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD).

5 As part of the application for the Emergency Authorisation, the different application methods, and the Asulox concentrations have been subjected to risk assessments.

Several methods of application could not be shown to be safe and therefore they have not been included in the list of authorised application methods in 2013. As a result, weedwipers, and drift sprayers (e.g. the Micron ULVA) are not authorised for use in 2013.

6 Also, the only concentration that is approved for use with hand-held equipment is 1 part of Asulox to 100 parts of water. Stronger concentrations have been recommended previously for some applications but these are not authorised for use in 2013.

7 A new application for an Emergency Authorisation will need to be submitted for use of Asulox for bracken control in 2014. Where safety information exists for other methods of application, or for use of different concentrations, this may be submitted as part of the application so that these issues can be addressed in the application. If the application is successful, it might then be possible to re-instate these techniques in 2014.

  • **Please note, Asulox is approved under an Emergency Authorisation and will only be available for sale until the 18th August 2013.
There is a designated final date for use. Please see below for restrictions on the last date of use**

    Changes from 2011:

Progreen is the sole supplier of Asulox in 5L (20L also available)
The approval for use of Asulox on Docks has been withdrawn
The approval for use of Asulox in weedwipers and drift sprayers has been withdrawn
Asulox is especially for use on bracken in rough upland intended for grazing, agricultural grassland or amenity vegetation

    Active Ingredient: 400g asulam
    MAPP no.
Rate: to treat Bracken, apply 11 L/ha
Knapsack rate: 1:100 (200mls in 20litres water) for spot treatment
Suggested safety clothing - safety clothing bundle (see Safety Clothing section or click here)

Directions for use: using Asulox for Bracken Control

    Apply on a dry day
Knapsack treatment suitable where bracken is up to waist height
Use of a non-ionic wetter is recommended, such as Warrior
Bracken should be treated in full frond (all fronds fully expanded) but before yellowing (start of senescence). Normally this will be within the period from July to late August (early August in Northern Britain)
Because herbicide symptoms are virtually absent in the year of spraying (due to the onset of senescence), we recommend the use of Indicator Blue food safe marker dye to identify treated fronds. This is simply added to the tank mix with Asulox
Knapsack nozzles should be suitable for a MEDIUM or COARSE spray
The fronds must not be damaged by livestock, frost or by cutting before treatment. Do not treat bracken affected by late frosts (bronzed and stunted fronds)
Do not cut the bracken or admit livestock for at least 14 days after treatment
At least 6 weeks should elapse between applying Asulox and sowing or planting any subsequent crop
Only one application should be made per crop/situation per year

Please note: Under the terms of the Emergency Authorisation Asulox must be used up by 31st October. All unused bottles of Asulox must be returned.
If you have purchased from Progreen, please return in a clean, resaleable condition to us by 11th October 2013. For details of suitable ADR registered couriers please contact us.
Once approved by the manufacturer, Progreen will be able to credit customer accounts directly for the purchased price of the product.
