  • When i first started my company i had a glance at that site. Think i joined as a free member. The thing i didnt like about the site was, that you put your price on the site for everyone to see and the job basically went to the person who quotes the least amount!
Not i may be wrong but i personally think that if you are paying professionals to do a service for you, the cheapest quote isnt always the best way to go. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
I dont see why proffessionals like us should sell ourselves short just because a jack the lad thinks he can do the job for half the price (with the standards being half as good too!!!)
    I would avoid that site
  • Yeah thats what is slightly worrying to be honest... that and the fact that they want me to send a bank statement or a utility bill to verify my address... while I have no problem with the principle of verifying my address I do have a problem with sending private information to a third party that I have absolutely no idea of their authenticity.

    Very strange set up really.
  • THis is similar to rated people!
We've tried both, however we have found that most people (custs) who use these sites tend to be the ones who have rang local gardeners, thought the price too steep, so thought they could get a garden tidy for £70. Or the one we did quote on they said their budget was £150 for what was about 5 days work. Unfortunatley I think the "Save 30% of normal trade prices" addvertising attracts the wrong sort of customer.
  • I have just sent an email asking for clarification of their verification process. I have mentioned that I have recently opened a bank account and even they asked me to come into the branch to verify my address. Strange, we will see what they reply as.
  • It's a bit like e bay in reverse. "I've got a job. Who will do it for the least price." In my veiw the only people posting jobs are cheapskates that don't want to pay the proper rate, and the only people getting the jobs are so bad they'ill take anything. I guess it puts the right type of people together.
  • It gets stranger. I have now had this email sent to me 4 times today (I registered today)

"When checking your MyHammer user account we discovered that some of your documents are still missing.

IMPORTANTWe will require that you verify your address by sending us a copy of your bank statement/utility billwithin 13 days. Simply send it via fax to 0845 869 9322or upload it under Document Upload within your profile. We reserve the right to block and potentially delete users who do not send us the correct documentation for user verification. We appreciate your understanding. Thanks for your understanding. This verification doesn't just improve your own trustworthiness, it also gives you more confidence about who you do business with."

Now they are obviously keen to get me to send my documents, but what is odd is that I joined today, and they have sent me the email 4 times, I assume to try and push me along, and yet there is no way I could get any documents to them in less than 12 hours.

Time to delete my account I think.
  • I hate to sound like this is an obsessive crusade but I have received TWO more e-mails today that say I need to provide verification or I will be removed from the site.
I have replied as follows... "I have already asked for you to provide me with some security reassurances. Please provide them before I send you such sensitive information."..... and I have sent it 12 times. They might just listen this time, although I doubt it.

From what I have read on other forums about Myhammmer, they take 6% commission?

  • sorry to jump back to rated people (I have more exp with this).
I spoke to paver / builder this aft about a possible patio job and mentioned these sites. He's only tried rated people too, back in the heart of the crunch last year when work was tight - same story though, they seem to attract the customer base which is either financialy restricted, or financialy tight.
The business plan seems to be to monopolise the 'lead' market for tradesmen. The only problem is they cant possibly have an in-depth understanding of each trade, in 200 odd geographic areas.

Simply put - paying £14 for a "one of garden tidy 12m x 7m max budget £100" and £8 for "lawn cutting on average lawn" is just no realistic or feasible.
