Recommended sprayer for wood preservative?

We've got a 60m run of fencing to treat in an upcoming job, and I'd like to invest in a reliable sprayer. Any recommendations? All the ones I've used have been useless.

  • You can get an airless spray gun, thats what steve is on about, ordepending on what you want to spray, the viscosity, you could probaly use a nomal air powerd spray gun, you would just have to get the right nozzle for it. Air less would brobaly be better though.

The blokes in my family all spray for a living so i can get more info if you need.
  • I used a cheap diy cuprinol one bought from Wilkinsons for £16 last year and it's still going strong. Was really surprised how good it was and worked really well and very quick/accurate. If I remember without looking, holds 5 litres.
  • Hi Geoff

did you only use the so called Cuprinol sprayable material/paint (expensive) or have you used the standard material, Wilkinsons own for instance which as you know is cheaper?

  • It was the cuprinol stuff I put through however I have also put through creosote/old engine oil mixture which went through with no problem........ you can substitute another nozzle type from a CP sprayer if it doesn't spray to well. If you've a long fence run, will save hours of tedious work though as Paul says, difficult to get all the residues out afterwards...... I usually run a bit of paraffin through to get it clear.

  • We had both sides of a 150+ metre close board fence to do (for a regular) and Solo sent us two Hudson sprayers with special creosote nozzles- then later, a second set of even more special creosote nozzles – but we ended up using little electric £25 sprayers like this one. What a nightmare that was - but we use them now for shorter runs with brushes to help. If we get a fence that big to do again we'll hire something! – Won't use water based products if it's down to me.

Still got three big tubs of creosote left from that job, we do the compost bins with them.
  • Thanks folks. It seems like there's a gap in the market for a reliable and relatively cheap wood preservative sprayer that actually works!

I think £120 for a sprayer is a bit steep for this job, so it looks like paintbrushes this time around.

Would that be the Cuprinol Trade is the authority in high quality woodcare products for the professional and provides you with a comprehensive range for all your needs

Wood preservative, wood stain , varnish, exterior varnish, exterior gloss paint, etc are all different products for wood. Sawn or smooth, Quality of finish, etc As to whether you can spray the product successfully will depend on its viscosity. Water based products are about as effective as painting the timber with tea! Dulux Garden shades or similar give a better finish because of the higher pigment level, but they are not preservative.

go to Wickes, get thier wood preservative for fencing aboout £20 a tin, enough for 6m sq. A sprayer for about £10 and away you go! With this stuff, you can watch the rain BOUNCE of the wood. Not sit on it with cuprinol wood stain type of crap.

Better than Cuprinol crap (in my opinion!)
  • Just to let you know we finished this job a while back, and we used good old fashioned paint brushes in the end!
  • I'm with you on that one..... creosote+engine oil works really well....... I always soak fence post ends in the stuff, and not just my own!, to help them last. Don't know what I'll do when my old style creosote supply runs out........ did try something from Wickes a while back, called Creosote substitute I think........... d don't know what the difference was as it smelt and lookled like the original...... they're now doing something called Creosite I think but haven't tried that.
    • I do agree it is great stuff to use the problem is the stuff never seems to dry.

Like karl said we also have contracts to treat fence panels on a commercial basis. Spraying can not work no matter how or what you use. We use the creasote sub which I find is just as good.

The best result we have had is with mixing it with White spirit and using a cheap sprayer. We left all but one of the filters in which was near the nozzle, even then it blocked every 5 or so panels.
