Anyone recommend a good residual weedkiller?

Hi all,

After a good residual weedkiller, to be used on cracks in between paving slabs where there are a lot of weeds, to kill the weeds and also slow regrowth.

Obviously can't be anything which is going to stain the slabs and ideally at a good price.

Also aiming to use same stuff on a gravel/soil/grass parking area for same purpose.

Thanks

Andy

  • Hi Andy,

There are not many commercial residual weedkillers left on the market now, but currently we are selling a lot of Bayer Pistol. It is a barrier acting non-selective total herbicide for the control of a wide range of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds and grasses on soft and gravel surfaces in amenity situations.

    Contains 40 g/l diflufenican and 250 g/l glyphosate

Not sure as to regards of staining, but I am sure the Bayer Technical department could advise you.

On the retail side there is Groundclear, offering season long weed control – keeps weeds away for up to 4 months. New Simple Soluble Sachet application – no measuring required. Dissolves quickly. Systemic & residual – kills weeds and roots. Ideal for all tough weed killing.

    Active ingredients: Glyphosate, flufenacet, metosulam

    Hope this helps

  • It sounds like the slabs may have significant permeable gaps between them though in which case I would use Pistol. If it's an impermeable surface such as close block paving then I won't use it. Large slabs with wide joints draining away quickly yes I will.

The aim is to avoid use if there is any run-off.

  • Thanks Richard,

    I'll take a look

  • We use Pistol where paving runs up to factory/office buildings, car park kerb edges and the grotty industrial estate shingled areas and find it will keep weeds away from 3 or 4 months. We are tip toeing around using it on selected block paved areas where run-off is not a problem, but we dont use it on private drives.
  •

Just to confirm, sizeable gaps in the slabs where weeds are growing. Don't think run-off should be an issue at either site.

  • hows long does a bottle last? 50 quid any how many applications would i expect out of this please anyone..

  • Look up the product, it tells you the coverage in m2, and how long it lasts depends on how much area you spray!
  • just a few driveways, says 2,222 m² should last me a while ...
  • You could consider 'Chikara' (flazasulfuron). It's best applied before weed germination, but can be tank-mixed with glyphosate for later application.

  • A 5l bottle works out a good bit cheaper... I seem to be using one 5l bottle a season, and 3x5l glyph per season.
