Ok, my first post here, I run a small garden maintenance company and have avoided spraying professional chemicals, I have decided, for several reasons to get my PA's. The question is, I run my business from home and have an outbuilding plenty large enough for storing all my required tools & machinery. Am I allowed to keep such chemicals in this outbuilding at a residential address? Do I have to inform any local authority? I can't see me ever keeping more than 20 litres.

I Dont believe there would be any issues. All of this will be covered on your PA course! but basically a self contained lock box which is leak proof but vented

    Hi Mark,

It can get quite complicated for bigger stores but James has summed it up really - your store must be leak proof, have a bund that can cope with 110per cent of the storage capacity in the event of a spill, be fire resistant for at least 30 mins and be sited 4m from domestic housing....for small amounts it all means a purpose built chem box ticks all the boxes and saves a lot of hassle...I have attached the link to the sheet: "Guidance on storing pesticides for farmers and other professional u..." done by the HSE - nice & easy to follow.

    • Ok, thank you, looks like storage for my small quantities is straight forward, I'm pleasantly surprised.

With regards to my PA test, is there any literate you can recommend before I approach my local college to book the test?

Most of them will run a course before the test! As you will have to learn a fair bit and they give you lots of things which will be useful going forward!!

So my local place runs a course for pa1 then pa6 separately. With the test being conducted together. I would assume it's the same across the country?

Yes I think they stick to a loose format over the country -  we run training in Lincs and at centres around the country  - slight differences but normally the PA1 & PA6 are run on con-current days then  the test is done within a week if the candidates are all ok and ready. PA1 is now a computer multiple choice first thing in the morning - the assessor bring 10 laptops and the results are shown immediately - then the individual waits for his PA6 test which is approx at 2 hour intervals over the same day and next day...

Mark, think of it as a driving test - you are qualified but you never stop learning - its just the start... :)

          • Thanks for the insight.

        3314765664?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024I'd recommend these books.

I have copies that my guys have used prior to PA1/PA6 tests. While not true 'manuals' for the test it covers a lot of key subjects with common sense.

If still available from the BCPC, they only costs a ~Tenner each

  • Also worth pointing out that you need an approved storage container fixed to your vehicle when you transport the chemical to your place of work. Also advisable to have a sticker on your vehicle in case of fire or accident. All this will be covered on the course.
