Advice for my situation?

Afternoon folksI'm looking for a bit of advice on what type of vehicle to getBasically for me just now it's just homers I do but I'm running out of space in my wee car and I don't want to ruin it!I'm thinking either a small van, transit connect size, or a Nissan quashkai with small trailerThe main thing is the removal of rubbish from jobs that's sending me down this route then it's down to running costs between the two!Eventually I want to go self employed so this is hopefully the beginning!TIA

  • Yeah I'm looking towards that right now, start as I mean to go on! Would it be better to start with a van or large car and trailer?
  • I don't have a maintenance run the now it's normally just one offs like driveways paths fences etc getting rid of it is not a problem for me it's just how I transport it to the skip

So the rubbish I generate is mainly soil, turf sods, chunks of slab but I am looking to get onto the maintenance side of things

The reason I said a wee van is that I was speaking to a guy yesterday who is in the same situation as me and he has a small Peugeot van and he is happy enough with it, my mates dad and his pal have a decent run of 80 gardens that they do ut if a small van whereas another that I know uses the quashkai and trailer method as he still needs a family car

I'm just looking to steadily build things up so I thought the bigger car till I can afford a full size transit lwb alongside it

I have just purchased a new Renault Kangoo van, all of my daily maintenance kit fits in with plenty of room, the new Kangoos are a lot bigger than the old ones, I don't think the size of van you are after will be a problem, i do think you may have a problem though when it comes to towing a trailer behind one as the power to pull the trailer full of rubbish might be a bit much to ask of a small van, there is also the issue of legality when it comes to the amount of weight you can tow, I'm no expert on this subject but if im right there is a max point you need to watch out for when towing???? I know my new Kangoo will take my kit, but it won't tow a trailer, i reckon If I tried I'd end up going backwards haha ;-)
    • Yeah I don't have that part on my licence so need to watch what I'm doing!

The kangoo was what I was more leaning towards I could always empty the tools out when I need to take it away, the tools could go in the trailer with a tarp over the top

What part don't you have on your licence? If you passed your test after 1997 then you can't tow at all unless you have taken B and E. I think:) I passed before then so it doesn't matter to me, but don't get caught towing if it's not on your licence. I got stopped last night towing my big trailer empty and they were asking about weights (even though it was empty) and my licence, it was fine but just watch yourself!
  • 2 things ..

1 a qashkia is a awful car to choose

2 you don't have a trailer license so towing a large amount of grass is going to put you over and invalidate your insurance.

my answer buy a proper van - transit or tipper and do it properly and don't risk yourself getting into trouble over so little

    • i am post 1997 but i can still tow a certain amount untill i have the cash to go through the course

yeah looking more towards getting rid of the car and getting a transit and grafting my backside off so i can afford a car alongside it

It all depends on what sort of work you are doing. You can tow. You can drive a 3.5T vehicle and tow a 750kg trailer without a licence. You can tow a bigger trailer with a smaller vehicle as long as you don't go over 3.5T. However if you passed your test after January 2013 you can't tow anything. I found a small transit too small for me, upgraded to a mwb super high roof and never looked back. But I take away waste on every site
