Advertising.. What's best?

I tend to find more localised publications are the best form of advertising, We have a local magazine called "in your vicinity" and this produces so many more enquiries than any other. Even the big names such as yell etc don't compete when it comes to advertised work.

Other that this it's mainly word of mouth.

What advertising works best for you? is it the same sort of scenario?

    We only advertise in one local magazine, the rest is word of mouth. I once spent £650 on a yellow pages add that we had one call from in 12 months, and that was a £220 job with around £100 of materials! So won't be going there again.

    I would say, in no particular order, forms of advertising i find/have found successful are:

    Use of free online listings to point customers towards the business website.
    Door-to-door targeted leafleting.
    Direct correspondence with businesses either through phone calls or formal letter.
    Recommendations
    Being approached whilst working or out and about - from van sign writing and/or uniform and good work.

    Have used local magazine advertising before but found it expensive and not very productive.
