A spreader for fertiliser and grass seed

I am beginning to get a number of resquests for grass seeding and fertilising the grass. I am thinking about getting a spreader as I feel that this allows for the appropriate distribution. I would be interested how others spread thgrass seed and fertiliser. Am Ispending out for something that isn't essential?

What size of lawns and how often will you be using? You could need anything from a £35 hand spreader to a £700 broadcast spreader.

    Hi James,

Size of the lawns matter,  but also shape will dictate whether you are better off with a broadcast spreader or drop spreader....Obviously the rotary/ broadcast spreaders work welll on a large lawn or expanse but a curved or narrow lawn better suits a drop spreader so prills are not flung into flower beds/ patios etc....

Let me know as we have a couple of options we could offer...or look HERE

    • Thanks, Richard. Lawns are generally rectangular, although not too big. Largest is probably about 1000m2. Was going to go for a rotary becuase they appear to have a good ,mechanism for controlling flow and pneumatic tyres, which people recommend. However, I could be pursuaded a drop spreader. I would welcome your advice, or anyone elses.I need to purchase in the next couple of days.

  • I use the cheapo Scotts roatary.  Plenty good enough for most lawn, our largest decent lawn is around 1000sq m. and it does the job.  Lasts about a couple of years.

Also to throw into the mix - depends what you are spreading.

Longlife coated fert doesn't always do well through a drop spreader as it cracks and damages the coating.

Likewise I wouldn't use a rotary for anything containing iron for risk of staining.

Give Progreen a ring - they are a helpful bunch and will guide you in the right direction.

    • Yep what Adam said about calling progreen, very supportive supplier on ljn.

      • Thanks, all. I will give progreen a call today.

don't go drop spreader, very hard to get down with correct overlap - often will miss/overlap slightly leaving a line. Can be done OK, but broadcast a lot easier and just accept you'll occasionally be fertilising the borders (then you can't use combo fert/weed granules).

If you've mainly small lawns, a quality hand spreader (circa £40) will suffice. You can even do the 1000sqm one at a push. You'll have a work out your own callibration through weighing and knowing the lawn size.

We've a few of these that we use for small lawns when a pedestrian spreader is overkill or access problems:

  •  Hi James, this is what I use for grass seed n fertiliser on small lawns. And only grass seed on bigger lawns. It's a solo 9kg grass n fertiliser spreader.. very handy.  Never given me a problem..have it about 5 years now. 8 speeds(rates) Left ,right ,front adjuster..I see it's for sale on gardenlines.co.uk..wear a mask or visor on a windy day..

    Best
