Anyone operating a waste carrying business is required by law to have a Waste Carrier's Licence. These can be obtained from the Environment Agency, Saxon House, Little High Street, Worthing, West Sussex, BN11 1DH tel: (01903) 703800
  • The best way forward is to recycle, recycle and freecycle. If we can't recycle it ourselves we offer it via freecycle, tradeleftovers.com and good old e-bay!

If you can't give it away it's going to cost you £40 a m3 for active waste and £90 a m3 for inactive waste in Berkshire!

Re-use it or burn your money - and make sure you have a waste carrying licence even if you are taking it to someone to recycle. It's still classed as waste when en route somewhere or sitting in your yard waiting for some lateral thinking.

I have always wondered why 'green waste' is always more expensive to dispose of than mineral waste such as concrete and bricks. Any thoughts anyone?
  • I think it is due to how much can be charged for resale. "Clean" Bricks and Concrete can be disposed of for free at some yards, which I would assume is then broken down (with ease) into aggregate and resold, whereas green waste is a more lengthy and slightly more complicated process.

I am not sure how flexible or cost effective this is but I have seen these Hippobags on sale in builders merchants.

I think that there is a market for mobile shredder units, like dustcart's, that could do collections from homeowners direct to composting sites.

I see a huge cost in removing bulky items such as prunings etc when it could be reduced to 10% of its original volume.

Think about it, that is nine less truckloads, nine less pollution and ten percent of the cost.

We use Hippo Bags a lot and Grab Lorries. We always bill disposal at cost and give the client a choice of options. One had a right whinge at the cost of a 8 yard skip recently. So we told him to keep ringing around until he could find a cheaper method as he would not listen to our advice (heard this before?). Hippo Bags worked out the cheapest method which was our first proposal. But at least the client felt happier about the two hours on the phone and internet trying to get a better deal because he was out of touch on the cost of waste removal.
  • i feel there is a real need for a green waste collection service at a price for the trade surely its a winner 1 truck collecting rather than 20 tipping
  • TVGLANDLANDSCAPING, you have a very similar thought to me. When I was in France, there are composting areas, which are segregated into grass, branches, weeds, wood, etc and they can be used by anyone, because eventually the council should be profiting. I have always thought of a disused local site, each town has one as we know. Within this site, a shredder would be the first port of call, with the shreddings then entering an industrial sized tumbler. It seems very simple, but it doesn't seem to happen.,
