Stihl Battery kit

Good evening all. I'm about to make the leap into cordless battery kit. One big concern I have is rain. I'm one of those mad types that doesnt stop work except in extreme weather and I was wondering how the kit fairs in rain?

I'm thinking hedgetrimmers, Kombi with long reach hedgetrimmers + polesaw and strimmer. I've read all I can via the "search" bar but would appreciate any up to date comments from those who use battery gear regularly. Thanks.

Hi Tony, we are called Rain-or-Shine so don't have much excuse to stop if it's raining :-) We've been using the battery kit for around 7-8 months now in all weathers. We do try to put it under shelter when it rains but obviously if you are using it you can't.

I did have to have a module replaced under warranty for our blower but it was a dry day when it faulted so I can't say it was directly related to getting wet. The only other issue was our strimmer faulted once while using it in the rain, which I have done many times, but on this occasion it was absolutely lashing down. I stuck it in the garage overnight and it has been fine ever since.

I don't feel that the battery kit is quite as robust as the petrol and you do have to plan around battery life (we carry a charger and plug in at customers houses, always trying to have a battery charging even if they are only partially used).

However, from personal experience, I would say that once you've moved over to battery, you won't want to go back to petrol.

    • Thanks Darren. Like the name!  My mates think I'm crazy but as you must know, cancellations would be impossible to rearrange.

I do wonder about the robustness aspect of the motors. It's been very rare I've not managed to get a faulty petrol machine going again, at least enough to limp through the job.

I have Stihl cordless hedge trimmers, strimmer and blower all of which have been soaking wet with no problems so far. I think unless water literally pours into the battery housing they will be fine.

I do agree with Darren though on how robust they are, my strimmer is a couple of years old now, it has worked very hard and is looking a bit worse for wear so I will be interested to see how long it lasts. One of my Stihl petrol strimmers is more than 15 years old and still going strong! I don't think the cordless one will even come close.

    • Thanks Jim. Maybe worth hanging on to my petrol combi as a back up.

  • EGO would be a better bet :)

I changed to battery kit two years ago with the full range from EGO and I can't fault it none of my kit has missed a beat !!!

    • Thank Graham, The EGO stuff looks great and I've not ruled it out. Stihl has got me by for years and I'm probably scared of too much change, I swore I wouldnt switch to battery but here I go!
