Green Waste Disposal Newton Abbot

I am going to be doing some work for a relative near Newton Abbot, Devon and I'm likely to need to dispose of a van of green waste (less than £500kg).Local recycling here - https://new.devon.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/commercial-business-waste-and-recycling/ - seems pricey compared to what we are used to paying west of London.Does anyone have any recommendations for anywhere offering better value? We are upper tier registered waste carriers with the Environment Agency. Many thanks. Nick

In various recent discussions on this website I have said that there isn't a green waste recycling centre locally, we have to pay to take it into a general waste transfer station.

I have been driving past the Hill and Moor recycling centre near Pershore run by Severn Waste who operate the councils recycling centres on a daily basis, so I called in and spoke to the weigh bridge operator who guards the gate.

Only existing trade account customers are allowed to use the facility and no new trade customers are allowed access.

So even though the Devon prices may seem expensive to you, if they let you in you will be doing better than we are around here.

  • I live outside Newton Abbot and the local council, Teignbridge DC, is very hot on managing both domestic and commercial waste. I don't use the local tip as I usually dispose of waste generated in my customers' gardens. Torbay Council tip at Paignton will not allow commercial vehicles on site at all unless you go on the weighbridge. Both councils will enquire as to where your waste come from.

Staying slightly off topic - That's standard practice around my region to be an existing trade customer and generate a WTN to get in (abd if we're in a hire van this also creates a minor problem as our number plates are logged).

The WTN specifies the waste type, amount and producer and been a legal requirement for years, but is starting to be strictly applied. We have a section on our job sheets for exactly this that is shown on entry.

I seems that due to the success of the local councils marketing their garden waste service, that residents have to pay for in addition to paying their council tax, there is several thousand tonnes of garden waste to be composted at the recycling centre and there isn't room for additional customers.

  • in a nut shell councils do not want waste as they have to recycle a high percentage of what they collect ( another EU ruling) also there is £85 per ton land fill tax to pay whom it goes to I do not know
