Thoughts on the Stihl battery range of products

I have just been having a look through the new 2013 stihl brochure.I am about to order the 130 Kombi however the battery range caught my eye.I see that they have now released the back pack battery. It gives approx 230 minutes constant use dependant upon condition and climateYes I know these are double the price of the Kombi system however what will the benefits using these bring?I will start off.Advantages.I live in Hamburg and noise pollution is always high on the agenda.I thought I could get to a job early start with the battery pack then half an hour later use the lawnmower??Light weight.Saving on fuel. How much would I expect to save?I would be looking at the strimmer, hedge cutter and blower.Regards

  • We are using the MSA160 When we Demo and it's life is good the chain is very fine and catches a bit. In terms of battery life it lasts hours when we are using it for Demo days for Truncator. It's also a lot quieter than the petrol saw. Just this fact has allowed us to demo where we would not normally be allowed to at shows.

  • Cheers for the rapid input Steve.

I have just been checking on the dbi rating and the battery products can be as much as 15dbi quiter.

The initial expense is a huge kick in the nuts. £1000 for the back pack battery, AR 900.

I am wondering if I would get any huge saving in fuel over one or two seasons?

The noise level alone makes lean towards this product but at over double the price.

If I felt I would save a significant amount on fuel then it would be another plus for me.

I know the cheapo chain saw I used last year drank fuel like a fish.

What run time would I get from the 130 Kombi engine?
  • I'll ask Richard my boss tomorrow as it's his saw. We got it purely for demo use. it's way quieter but if you have a lot of cutting to do I would honestly use petrol it still does not have quite the power needed for big bits or tough stuff. It is an eyeopener when we started with it. We tried all sorts of wood, old oak and stuff that was fished out of rivers etc. It cuts it but not the same speed as a petrol

  • Cool.

I am negotiating hard for the next purchase. I will not be using the chain saw, at least not for the foreseeable future.

However I hope to be getting the use out of the hedge cutter, and hopefully a good couple of hours per day out of the strimmer.

I can appreciate the light weight as I was in the shop last week and pick a strimmer up. The battery was in and I honestly thought it was a plastic dummy.

The weight and noise was unbelievable.

I should have nipped out side to demo it!
  • Hi everybody.

I have just received this email from my local dealer who I am buying the Honda 536 roller from and some other bits and bobs.

    Hello Gregory,

    The Akkumachine are very good.

    http://www.stihl.de/STIHL-Produkte/Akku-Geräte-und-Zubehör/Zubehör-für-Akku-Geräte/22070-1592/Akkupack-AR-900.aspx

There are problems in Hamburg when you want to work from 12 till 3 a clock.

The AR900 is brand new. Is the first year that stihl have a battery in this size.
The stadtreinigung (council) in hamburg are looking to buy some machines with akku. Because they have the same problems with the noise.

However having just working on the cost outlay is somewhat scary. 1200 euro for the battery pack alone is rather scary.

The Mrs said I should still stick with the Stihl 130 kombi system but if I cant work for two hours then that is a lot of down time throughout the season, which could pay back dividends at the end of the season.

I am waiting for a concrete price to see if they can tempt me.

    Fingers crossed.

Update in the next week or two. If I forget then please remind me!

    Regards

  • I would avoid the Stihl Cordless range for commercial use for now. Although now having a 36v 891wh battery back pack for longer run time, the tools themselves are still just designed for their original weekend warrior use.
Yes the other options from Pellenc are expensive but the quality and technology is a lot more advanced and specifically built for commercial use, you definitely get what you pay for.
Why do you think stihl avoid documenting the power output of these tools?
Pellenc specific Lithium ion and Polymer battery technology's are also lighter and Yes you do notice it even when it’s on your back.
I've also noticed the crank and rod assembly in the hedge trimmers don't seem to have any needle rollers like those in any other commercial quality trimmer.
Maybe in the future they will release some commercial grade units to handle the demands of commercial use.

  • Hi Tiny and a great reply thank you.

Just the other week I again was debating a purchase but the cost is still way too high and after you have pointed out that the Stihl battery equipment is still not designed for the pure professional I will keep to my 130 kombi unit which I must admit is the bees knees.

Rather than the purchase for the Stihl battery kit I bought an Elephants Trunk and WOW I absolutely recommend it to everybody even though the clients say I look like an alien!
