Yew Hedge

I have had a customer ask to cut an established Yew hedge back in width and height

Height im ok about approx 600mm but the side has to be cut back hard approx 200mm, this would be into the wood.

Question is , is it ok to do this? I know it will recover but will it shock it to much?

  • I would probably do just one side one year and the top the next year personally. Grows back very well from old wood but doesn’t like too much of a shock!

I agree with Jon side one year top the next and give the base a good rake out and mulch and feed with blood, fish and bone to help cope with the stress.

Yes a yew will sprout from wood unlike basically every other conifer but it is slow and as other have said  they dont really like it but do survive.
