  • Hi John,

    Great advice, thank you.
  • Hi Laura

Just been looking at you site and came up with an idea for businesses - particularly if they have grounds to play with. Apart from the obvious idea of planting which will encourage wildlife any merit in providing a vegetable/ flower garden for everyone to get involved in? A Company gardening club! Possibly a competition to redesign a small area of grounds for use by the staff with 'encouraging nature' or some such in the title?

Stop using small plastic bags in supermarkets for veg - it's already wrapped.
When buying prepacked sandwiches at lunchtime if asked if you would like a bag politley decline. They are already sealed and besides will shortly be openned and eaten!
    Walk to the local shop

Loads of things to do in the garden - which you probably already know but one for children in particular. Plant flowers and make bundles of bamboo for insects to live in. Compost more. Have a big long list but do not wish to bore!
  • Ah, your list doesn't bore! Some really great tips there.

I particularly like the Gardening Club idea. It's things like that that really encourage people to put more effort into planting. Obviously plants indoors also have loads of benefits, so perhaps inter-department competitions could happen where each department has various plants and planting challenges - anything to get people really excited about being green!

    Great ideas Simon :-)

  • Hi Laura

Just realise I used the words competition - on reflection this might not be such a good idea?

I was thinking about more a way of relaxing over a lunch break with some tangible results. It could also be a way to break down barriers within a comapny by bringing people togther - regardless of department or rank.( rank left at the desk please) They wiil satrt to see a different side of each other. Managers may see different skills they haven't seen before-maximises employee potential. Breaks down barriers - integrates the business better. helps de-stress - which in turn can help reduce absence rates. Space to think and come up with new ideas- Therefore has benefits in making the company more efficient (bottom line). Would suggest that if it is an employee project then any 'office status' goes out the window.

If it were competetive then it sets departments against each other, so whilst seeming a good idea this simply takes office politics outside. It should not, in my opinion, be seen as a 'formal' team building excercise - it's not compulsory just let it grow gently.

  • Hi Simon,

Yes, your ideas make a lot of sense. It would be fantastic if people could be persuaded to undergo such tasks, but sometimes it's that persuasion that's difficult.

That's what we at eFIG are trying to help people with. By providing people with information and facts on why they should be utilising planting, both indoors and out, we stand a better chance of educating people on the benefits of plants. That way, our audience becomes better equipped to persuade their colleagues to take part as they better understand themselves the need for planting.

How do people on here feel that we could get more people using plants in their office? Have you ever tried to request more planting and been turned away?

Simon - what do you do? Are you a landscaper?

    Laura
  • Hi Laura

Glad you like the ideas. Me? Drystone walling, stone work and landscaping - putting skills to use that have been dormant for many years. Been in the corporate world which is perhaps why my replies tend to have a cost benefit slant to them- hope you don't mind; old habits die hard! Give me a wall above a spreadsheet any day of the week.

  • :-) I know where you're coming from completely. Have you ever thought about joining a trade association like eFIG? We represent interior landscapers and beyond, so you'd be the ideal candidate. What are your thoughts?
