working with railway sleepers

Hi,

It is the first time I am working with railway sleepers and I have a few questions.

I am planning to use treated new sleepers (softwood) as a border for an artificial grass area and to build some stairs (from a slightly higher to a slightly lower area of the garden (it is only about a foot).

This means that the sleepers will be in a direct ontact with earth. I plan to put them all on a concret footing though.

  1. Is this OK in terms of them rotting away - how long before you reckon I would run into issues of decay? Or should I use higher grade (harder) wood - my first choice would have been Azobe (Ekki) but the expense I believe is too prehibitive.
  2. What screws do I best us? I am planning on using 200mm screws to fix them throgh one into the other (planning to use them horixontally, i.e. laying on the wider side, and them being 150mm thick woudl 200mm bei enough)

Thank you kindly

Nik C

  • Softwood won't last five years. Use virgin oak sleepers- around £25 each. Timberlock style screws are what you need and a good drill to put them in and maybe a 6mm pilot drill also. 200mm will be plenty.
