Winter Shopping list

This thread has two purposes - to help decide and to help find!Over winter I'm hoping to replace some kit, specifically the Lawnmower and budget allowing add to the existing set up. The only issue being that I simply cannot afford new, but having seen an Etesia (46) in action, I simply have to have one.I've tried ebay but seem to have no luck, I was wondering if anyone knows where they can be sourced second hand - OR where a similar quality / effective machine can be sourced at reasonable expense?Previous threads have concentrated on whats the "best", but having seen the Etesia, I'm basing that as my standard, so any alternatives have to be as close in quality and performance to this.

  • I've been informed that the Hayter are not as good with wet grass, but nothing about sabo, what do you think? - And are there any good sources of second hand machines?

have you not considered the sabo/hayter ranger 53 pro as an alternative ?
  • how is your Hayter ranger 53 with Wet Grass?
  • PRO
Just bought an Etesia PRO 51X new as heard a lot about them on here demo'd one & bought it preffered the honda engine as opposed to the B & S but impressions are good just have to wait until it stops raining :-( If you go to the Etesia main website they sometimes have second hand mowers.
  • Pro Gard .... the problem you had starting your Briggs, was it the Intek engine by any chance.

Due to acess problems in terms of getting my own machine in I regularly use a hayter 53 pro in a clients garden, and also I owned one prior to the Etesias i have and now run.

The ranger is actually very caypable in the wet although not as good as etesia. Cuts quickly also.

However the machine is extremly heavy and the handlebars are not straightforward to lower. lacks a blade break so you have to keep reestarting the engine after emptying grass box You cant power the mower over gravel or up ramps.

The throttle and drive control lever casings broke apart on my machine. Drive cables broke after 18 months. lastly the briggs was not a particularly easy start on mine lacking a fuel tap although with one fitted it improved slightly.

I wouldnt change back to Hayter from Etesia.

like i say , theres only so much any mower will cut and collect in wet conditions , you carnt expect a mower to cut and collect if its a strimmer job , if you get me , if you think its suitable for a mower cut , it will do the job no problem , if you cut 2 times amonth or even monthly theres no problem what so ever ! there is a ranger 53 this is the ranger 53 pro ! it does have a very impressive blade on the deck i must say !

  • I thought it might be , I had an interesting conversation with a guy from Hayter customer services who told me that I should check the plug gap, as most people tend to service them themselves ..ie plug, oil, filter etc and apparenly the majority of people arent aware that the plug gap only need to be 20thou, spark plugs straight out the box are set to 30thou, I altered mine and it was amazing the difference, maybe yours was not the same problem, but I'm sure there will be other members not aware of this minor detail. apparently its in the book!, but who reads them. LOL

Yes, partly cured by fitting a fuel tap but I still atest that it is a poor engine.

  • More extreme than that Pro , they've done away with the intek altogether, in favour of the new Briggs Easy Start engine, no choke no priming bulb, just pull and go.

I wasnt aware of that either, it could well have been part of the problem. The fuel tap at around £2.50 is also a worthwhile adaption.....they may well factoy fit one these days on the engines now.

  • I'm getting the impression that perhaps If I cant find an etesia in my price range, I may have to look at second hand hayters, again though, does anyone know a good source of them other than ebay?
