  • Doesn't really make any difference................ the 10/30 would be more suitable if you were using the mower in very cold weather/Winter.

The SA30 is a lot more viscous than the 10w30 so not very good in cold enviroments. I use the 10w30 and check the oil often and do 2 or 3 oil changes a season and keep it topped up inbetween.

Use what the engine maker recommends ?

Typicalky B&S engines use a single grade oil (sae 30) and Japanese engines use a multi grade (SAE 10W30 or 40) being more tech advanced.

I tend to use oregon sae30 in everything, 1x honda gc160 1x gc190 1x gx160 B&S 125cc rotovator and a big single cylinder intek in the ride on. I should really use 10/30 in the honda but... I haven't. Change the oil once a month during the season in the mowers and twice a year in the rotovator.

  • 10W30 in everything, Briggs, Kawaski and Honda,

Compared to straight 30, pull start engines have less friction when starting, and the bigger Vanguards spin over much more freely before firing up.

Strangely B&S have only recently sanctioned use of multi grade in their engines, including historical models. The chart above also helps select the correct multi grade oil which does make a difference on cold starts.

    • Did find Briggs engine uses a bit more oil when filled with multigrade - nearly caught me out on one occasion as I didn't check the level regularly - had an engine almost empty.

Reading their blurb, they do say engines may use more oil

      "

      • Use SAE 10W-30 for a varying temperature range of 0 to 100° F (-18 to 38° C), this grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80° F(27° C) or higher"

Given choice (and experience), I would never buy a B&S engined piece of kit. Agricultural, dated designs and then they market a range of engines entitled GTS ( Guaranteed To Start ) kind of sums up their approach, but glad to see more modern engines appearing....
