would depend on what bar is fitted, usually the stihl bar itself will have printed on it specifications as to what chain it needs, number of drive links etc etc
I prefer the 1/4 as I find the 3/8 quite aggressive as it pulls into the cut causing the machine to bog down and slowing the cut. The 3/8 cut quicker with some omph behind it but didn't leave as clean a cut.
Yes I tried a 3/8 on my old KM & I agree. I was just thinking of the benefits of running the same size on both machines. I also want to get the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener. You have to order these for the chain size. It looks like you can just drop in different files but no one seems to be able to confirm it.
You can't chop and change the files as the diameter of the files is different and it would be sloppy in one and too big for the other.
Yes I wondered about that. Can you put a 3/8 on a new HT-KM without any other modification ? I really would prefer one size of chain & my 200T needs a 3/8 plus I only really want one sharpener.
I wouldn't worry too much about different files................... I've 3 different sizes and it really isn't a problem.
I have no problem with lots of files but I fancied using the Stihl 2 in 1 & they are 50 each.
... didn't know there was such a thing.... I can see why you'd only want one of them now at 50 each.
Don’t forget the sprocket

Now that's the strange thing because years ago I popped my old KM into a stihl dealer. He recommended a "bigger chain" & gave me a 3/8 but the sprocket was never changed.
