Which 21" Honda Mower

For the 2017-2018 season i purchased 2 Honda mowers. One was the HRG 416SK 16" Izy, self propelled and single speed .... This mower has been faultless and a joy to use.

The other mower was the HRG 536 VK 21" self propelled with variable speed via paddle on handle. Apart from really liking the control of speed the paddle offered, it struggled with a few niggles and one fault in particular. The niggles i could live with, but the big fault was the rear wheels would lock on pull back. It went back and forth to repairers to fix, but each time the fix was temporary. The fault seemed to be the bushes located on the shaft that went between the wheels and thru the gearbox, would not hold lubrication. It seems a very common fault and one with no permanant fix. In the end I had to sell it on and revert back to my trusty Hayter

I really like the ergnomics of the Honda, weight, handle height, manouevrability all suited me, and I am (against my better judgement) considering try another for next season. So is anyone running a Honda 21" self propelled (fixed speed or variable speed) model that has not suffered this problem. If so, can you confirm model number and when purchased please

I use a HRX537HY a bit more expensive than your HRG but it has been faultless, I purchased it in April 2017 it is variable speed with a xeony deck not a metal one but this has caused no problems with strenght and it makes it lighter to handle and it has the Versamow mulching. The new models use the paddle handle my speed is lever controlled but I got it at a good price as it was when the new models were coming out.

  • Hi Paul. I have the 21" Izy as well. Exactly the same model, although fitted with a mulching blade. I've not had a minute's trouble with it since I bought it around Feb 2016.  Still going strong, starts every time.  It gets all the "rough cut" use as well as some gardens where it is impracticle to use a rollermower. It needs rear wheels this winter, tyres actually but for the price, it's probably best to fit wheels as the bearings come with them. That is the only bill I've had-apart from regular servicing. If it packed up tomorrow it's been a good buy and I'd almost certainly go for another.

    • hrg536vk-web.jpgHi Tony ... Can I just confirm whether you have the variable speed paddle control or single speed bar control?

      • The paddle.

        • Thankyou

Hi Toy, I've got a 21" IZY myself, and was told there was no mulching plug available..

Is it just the blade your using and not a plug? I'd love this as a 21" mulcher!

      • No, it's just the blades and the collecting box door closed. Works fine.
