Alternatly rubber strips, also on ebay. I'd stick whatever you choose on with a high quality adhesive spray, even so far as 3m 90 spray

Thanks.. my hands / wrists are sore today from pushing the mower through a big lawn that had the equivalent of deep moss shagpile..
I think handlebar grips are definitely your easiest option. A bit of fairy liquid on the inside will help get them on if its a tight fit.
