What's the best gardener's breakfast?

What is the best gardener's breakfast?

What keeps you going whilst you're working hard at it all morning? Is it porridge or pork?

Hospitality's a bit thin on the ground during the cold weather this end. Whereas in the summer months the doors are open and coffee & biscuits can be offered on arrival-during the winter months it's a polite 'hello' & the doors are shut up for daytime telly watching to resume in the warm.

Subsequently the gap between breakfast and some refreshment/lunch gets longer and longer as the cold weather continues. I've tried porridge, sausage & beanz and eggs & bacon (not all on the same plate) but if I'm on the go 'big style' I'm ravenous after just three hours.

I need to find a combination of breakfast foods that's going to keep me going for at least the morning session. What do you eat before you leave in the morning?

And while we're on the subject of hospitality...has anyone noticed a dearth of mince pies this year or is it my eau de toilette?

  • I used to have the full English, but found that bending down to do some jobs was difficult, not to mention how much it slows you down !   I decided to try the healthy option and had an apple and banana with either apple or orange juice.  Felt so much better and not hungry. I would recommend it !

  • cereal  , porridge when very very cold if time.....  muffins , crumpets  - anything / nothing

  • The only answer to the hunger pangs is a mid morning coffee and biscuit/muffin I'm afraid.

  • Two cups of real coffee, two rounds of wholemeal toast, one with loads of peanut butter one with Marmite, I measure out a large mug of Dorset muesli which I have in a  bowl with soya milk, sometimes with a sliced banana on top.

That will keep me going till lunch ;-)

  • Tea and toast with marmite and peanut butter although this morning i  had cinnamon and raisin bagels for a change.

    Soup at around 10am.

  • Cup of tea. If I remember, can be bothered, porridge with added sultannas, or wheatabix. Also 2 or three breakfast bars as snacks to munch in the truck on the way. Don't know about the rest of you but in cold weather or extremely hot weather my appettite goes completley so eating just seems to go out the window.

Home made cereal bars, stuffed full of dried fruit, oats and honey . Fruit cake and tea for breaks

  • Porridge with sultanas and a banana cut up into it.  Keeps me going for a while! But I always have something to snack on by 11 otherwise I feel a bit faint!  I try to keep it to a cereal bar, or something that takes a long time to digest to keep me going until sandwich time.

  • i tend not to have breakfast. and i dont usually drink tea or coffee unless someone else makes it. i need to see a doctor as i dont really feel hungry until i'm desperate for food, and i'm always thirsty.

  • Sarah I thought I would be laughed at when I mentioned porridge and sultannas - must try the banana next time.
