What van do I want?

After several years of ruining my car (currently a Vauxhall Zafira)  with bags of compost/lawnmowers/gravels, I am thinking about getting myself a van.  I need something that is not too big (sort of VW Caddy sized) but which can also fit myself and two others in if necessary, so ideally with a seat in the rear which can be removed/folded down when not needed.  Also fuel efficient!  Any suggestions?

  • My transporter t4 is great.
  • yes, looking at the vauxhall combo crew van, that looks just what I am looking for.  Any one anything to say about this one in particular?

hi sarah i have a caddy only has 1 seat for passengers though, maybe you should think of a vauxhall combo they have folding seats , a good starter van ive had 2 in the past .. if yuor purchasing one check the service history the steering rack usually goes at over 50k miles make sure that has been done , otherwise i could fit in  2  19inch viking mowers in it plus othere tools at no problem .

Gear linkages can be problem on Vauxhalls too. Some of the bright red Royal Mail ones have dodgy door hinges due to them being opened and closed a zillion times.

If I was after a van I'd go for a Transporter Kombi or a Mercedes Vito Dualiner. That way you've got five seats and space in the back to put your stuff.

combos are fine same as any van if theyre serviced well, the post 2001 models are prone to oil coolers thats all really and some models of engine have fuel pump electrics problems

  • That looks a bit big for me - the combo is the size I was looking for.  How about a Ford Torneo connect?

  • Got to say i think the connect would be a great choice of van.

I sed to drive one and it was like driving a car.

Also a vw transporter is also a great choice!

  • An ex british gas ford transit connect would suit size-wise but it only has two seats. BG service them well, they have some creature comforts (aircon, parking sensors etc) and they let them go at three years old with less than 20k on the clock.
  • Vans yawn??

    Very sorry Sarah... :-)

Empty ones, or free delivery?  fuel efficient- no van!!!!

That's that done again... oh um roll on Tuesday

  • Love my citroen berlingo. I have car version rather than van - perfect for family and business. Good boot size and high roof, great for plants and back seats also fold down when I need more room. Got it 2nd hand so good value. I'm not a petrol head though :)
  • That was also something I was looking at.

  • How about the citron dispatch or similar, they have 3 seats in the front, can be a bit cramped if there are 2 bigish people on the bench seat but they are not much bigger than the caddy. Or maybe one of the smaller transits such as the t280.
