What to do about groups

I've been reviewing the groups - see here if you're not familiar.

Keeping group activity going is really tough but I'm reluctant to remove groups if members still find the content useful.

Perhaps you can let me know your opinion as to whether you'd like the groups to remain and/or you feel there is anything that can be done to get the momentum going again?

I very rarely look at them because they are so little used - that is the problem, they less they get used the less people look at them.

How about removing most and keeping the ones where premium suppliers can talk about their customers e.g Etesia group.

I meant to say "to" not about their customers

  • Ive never use the groups most posts on there are old and anything with a good number of posts gets dragged onto main forum the same with the handy where to tip and what costs that started on the hub was taken onto the open forum

One of the greatest challenges is to keep the momentum going.

I put a lot of time into LJN and much of it is administration now. Back in the day, when LJN came into being, I would easily put +80 hours into creating fresh debate and building useful content.

However, as the site grew, it became harder to maintain groups and maintain vibrancy. Other members willingly started groups but because of the demands of their respective days jobs, keeping momentum going became harder for them too.

Whilst I would very much like to see groups being used, I still see the previously generated content as useful. Especially for those using the on-site search as well as those using internet search providers.

Much of LJN's older content is still being accessed even though there appears to be no use of it in terms of front page activity.

Can you highlight most searched for terms, old posts, keywords, what visitors searched for, a tagcloud, to illustrate the 'background' reading?

Robbie - personally I don't see Premium membership as having a bearing on the use of the groups. I'd say that it's more about general apathy (I don't mean that in a negative way).

Brendan - I think - even though it has its critics - the Hub is building into a useful resource. There are 192 topics on the Hub now with 10 posts on the front page having had activity since 4 May.

Features such as the nursery, waste and machinery maps are only ever going to be useful if opened up to the widest audience IMO.

Good point Phil, one i had not considered.

  • Ditch them if they haven't had any activity in 3 months. No group is necessary if it's not used more often than that.

Let's be honest, I think there's a lot more posts about Etseias in the open forum than on their group, and nearly all the groups are the same. I do look at the groups occasionally, but more often than not a thread has gone cold before I even see it!

I think people have just forgot about them I know I did...

I think they died off when premium was introduced as in the past you were more likely to look for different discussions when the Key business section was in use. To me Phil there is the forum and the premium section, personally I never look anywhere else on the website apart from the odd blog.

That being said, wouldn't mind having one for jobber, but then again what would be the point as no one would ever view it lol.

The website has maybe evolved past groups, but there is no harm in leaving them there as there is lots of useful info in them, maybe need to make them more prominent on the website?

How about adding featured ones in a section on the right hand side of the forum where the ads are?
