What's wrong?

This dead patch of lawn just wont reseed, the dead area seems to be getting larger  (since Feb) not smaller.

Any ideas as to what may be wrong. The seed is ok, I've used premium lawn soil/compost. The client has watered the life out of it.

  • Its a small garden in an estate house, probably built around 20 years ago. The estate used to be one larfe house and garden. Im wondering if there is a massive bit of tree decomposing undet the ground and there is some sort of fungal infestation???5494646075?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • It hard to say but judging by the square ish shape they maybe a concrete base / other underneath ? Have you noticed any mushrooms last autumn ?

  • have you checked for chaffer grub or other insects even chemical petrol/diesel  contamination

you might have to dig a test hole or somthing like a mettal rod as a probe to see if there is anthing under the turf that might be affecting it

Have you squared it off Adam to define the edges for seeding ?

as mentioned above by others all good possible explanations

perhaps the remains of an old water well or shaft which has being filled in with rubble  hence the water draining away .

    Thanks guys

Its not chafer grub... I have that at another client... originally, in late winter we marked it all off , but the area is growing - you are correct, when we got on our hands and knees to rough up the soil yesterday prior to sowing more seed with soil over the top - it was as dry as the sahara.... far drier than the beds - so maybe there is something under the ground??

  • Nature doesn't like straight lines - so almost certainly man has taken a hand here somewhere.  As has been mentioned, an old base? Looking at the shape, with the apex, did a shed lie there for some time and the preservative leach into the gound?

It's a very "man made" outline, so unlikely to be chafers or fungal / root problems. I'd get a long metal rod/screwdriver (at least 18"), and poke around seeing whats under the top layer, plus dig some inspection holes, again, try for 18". That's likely to throw up the problem. I'd think maybe soak away / spectic tank / shed base most likely. Would be interested to hear back the results.
