What head are you using? Mine wear out but don’t fall to bits!
The biggest problem I get is they get harder and harder to put back together when putting fresh line in and I stand cursing them. It has meant to run close to the ground, mine wears fairly quickly if I am using it on pavement under a hedge but one has never fallen apart.
..might need to ask Graham Wright on a similar thread !.....
I must use more than a lot of people on here! It’s 2 mins to whip it out and reload the spool that’s there but the bigger ones (stihl 40-2 or 46-2) are easyto reload
It is a 36 volt Makita running on twin 18 volt batteries, I took it into the local garden machinery suppliers part department and asked for a replacement head.
The parts guy asked if I wanted another Makita head head, to which I replied no, as I have destroyed this one, so he sold me a Efco head saying “you’ll like this one, you reload it without taking it apart”.
I have been considering how I have been using the machine and one bad habit may be tapping the head at full revs rather than throttling it back to the slowest speed, also I have been tapping it on hard surfaces to avoid digging a hole in the grass. Is there room for improvement there?

I’ve got the Stihl combi and it’s now three years old. I find if you bump it hard then LOADs of line comes out, gentle tap, at medium speed, seems perfect.
Although I don't wear them out too often I do see them as a consumable item really. I used to be more careful with them, but now not so much. Might be why mine is stuck on on one of my strimmers :)
Better that than falling off at random like I had last year!
