What next after an Apprenticeship ?

Our young lad has now finished his 'apprenticeship' (at end of Feb 2013) and is back in full time work with us.

I appreciate that learning continues, as he puts his previous year's training to practical use, but wondered if anyone had thoughts on what next ?

I am trying to provide a structured work environment to allow him to put training into practice as I feel its the best way.

We work in a practical industry and some of the best practitioners I have seen have never been to college, never earned a qualification (unless required by law) yet deliver stunning levels of work. I don't feel the need to dispatch him to another bout of training until it is relevant and he is ready to absorb. Is that the right way ?

Is there anyone else that has been down that road and can share what they did next ?
