What legislation hurts or benefits us in Landscaping ?

We were having one of those 'putting the landscaping world to rights' discussions last night down the pub after work.

So I just wondered; what one piece of legislation or 'red tape' hurts or benefits us most as landscapers and you would like to see sensibly changed/removed/enhanced in respect of;

-  industry legislation (ie waste, licensing, training etc), and separately

-  running a small business (tax, vat, insurance etc) ?

Also, what additional legislation would help the landscape and horticulture industry?

I'm interested in seeing what members say Gary but could I extend your question a little?

    Absolutely, topic modifed/extended....

  • VAT hated by every business.

Why should we as business owners, have to add a now 20% onto our prices?

Why indeed should small businesses, vat registered, just be tax collectors and do the paperwork for them.

As LJN perhaps now is a good time to start a campaign to exempt Horticulture, making our world greener and better place, from VAT.

Now, there is a positive thought to talk about.

  • Good luck with that one!

  • Legislation to end the uncertainty of who is an employee and who is an independent worker/self employed.  We should be allowed to decide our own status.

  • When was the last time anybody checked if you had a pa1 /pa6 do the course pay your cash but I feel you are in the minority, never checked.

I also feel you should have to be on some sort of register to show you have got the above certs along with public liability insurance.

Agree, I would to see it easier for (potential) clients to look up your insurances, waste license, pesticide license, chainsaw licenses etc. The technology exists to allow it to happen ......

Separately, when we respond to commercial opportunity we provide a Co. Overview, verification of insurances, a short bio of each person and our licenses etc.

It makes the client stop and think.....

Agree as well, I have never had any of my spraying certificates or waste carrier licence etc checked!
