Medlar, quince, cherry- prune march/ autumn. Have you got any pictures of the buds and the leaves?
could do with a close up pic of a stem .... might be some kind of plum. Sometimes a dried up wizened fruit still attached to a branch can give a clue
Here is the trunk... and no I only have pictures of it from today... .I am sure I will be able to ID it when it comes into leaf, but am hoping we can work out if it is ok to tidy up now... or not.
I could be wrong but from those spiky ends on the twigs, almost thorn like, look like those semi wild damson type of plum trees with small purple fruits.... if you look in the leaf litter under the tree maybe will find oval stones to confirm. They say not to prune plums in the winter due to risk of disease but looking at the state of it I would crack on and get it done now. I prune my own in the winter as not time to do in summer and still get more than enough fruit
I'm there again tomorrow Billybop - I will search and post if I find anything, thank you
looks a lovely place Adam, walled garden etc....
It will be when it is back in good form.... all 5 acres of it !!!!
I second the damson/plum seeing the bark and the suckers. The suckers are normally from the wild root stock when they've been grafted. I personally would not prune any stone fruit in winter because of silver leaf disease.
Exactly my thoughts.... I needed a second opinion though
I agree with billybop forfeit amy fruit for this year and hard prune shape now. I'm all for pruning in the summer but you can't see what your doing when it's in leaf with that canopy. Prune hard now and still summer prune lightly later on. I had a quote before lockdown at Elcot park near Hungerford to do similar with more trees. God knows what state it's in now. Not too far from u Adam, maybe quote for that too before you retire !!
