Does it have needle like thorns ?
No I don't think so . The ned of the leaves are a little pointy, but only very soft, not sharp to the touch.
As it is alongside the driveway it has always been cut frequently so they're not aware if it does. It does look lie it may have little buds on it near to where the leaves join the stem.
Myrtus communis, Common Myrtle. Haven't seen many so not so common.
Hi There
it looks like Berberis stenophylla to me but from the picks I can't be 100%.. there appears to be a thorn at the end of each leaf which leads me to think it might be and the glossy green leaf too..
Could be wrong

What I want to do it cut it right back as you can see in the picture that it is encroaching on the driveway. I just want to make sure that by doing so it won't die off
